Statewide rates only; local rates vary by address. This is a general calculation, not tax advice.

How to use it

  1. Enter the price before tax, or the total if you're working backwards.
  2. Pick the state. The statewide base rate fills in automatically.
  3. Add your local rate if your city or county charges one; combined rates run above 9% in parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama and Washington.
  4. Read the tax and the total. In reverse mode, read the tax that was hidden in the price.

Worked example

A $100.00 purchase in California, state rate 7.25%, with a 2.00% local rate.

Rate is 9.25%. Tax: $100.00 × 9.25% = $9.25. Total: $109.25.

Backwards: a receipt total of $109.25 at 9.25% means the price before tax was $109.25 ÷ 1.0925 = $100.00.

How it's calculated

rate = state rate + local rate

Adding tax: tax = price × rate, total = price + tax

Backing tax out: price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate), tax = total − price before tax

Tax is rounded to the cent. Retailers round each line or each receipt slightly differently, so a real receipt can differ by a cent.

FAQ

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska lets localities charge their own, so some Alaskan towns still have a rate.

Why is my real rate higher than the state rate?

Cities, counties and special districts add their own rates on top. The combined rate is what you pay at the register. Enter the local part in the local rate field; state revenue department sites have a lookup by address.

Do marketplaces collect sales tax for me?

Yes. Under marketplace facilitator laws, eBay, Etsy, Mercari, Poshmark, Depop and Amazon collect and remit sales tax on your sales in every state that has one. If you sell through your own site, you're responsible once you pass a state's threshold, typically $100,000 in sales into that state.

Is the rate I get here exact for my address?

The state rate is. The local rate is whatever you enter, so for an exact figure look up the combined rate for the delivery address. Rates change most often on 1 January and 1 July.
